Joel's Place Skate Park & Youth Center
The mission of Joel’s Place Skate Park and Youth Center is to give creative, adventurous, adrenalin seeking youth a good, positive outlet for their energy. Joel's Place offers youth a safe place to call their own, with an indoor/outdoor skate park, retail ride shop, a café, a concert venue, recording studio, gaming room, a community garden, outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, and snowboard park. It is a place where young people and their families will know they are safe and respected while having an incredible amount of fun.
In keeping with our roots we hold a Friday night worship and sharing time with the youth who desire to be part of the heart of Joel’s Place. At 7pm Friday night we serve a hot meal and then the band plays and one of our staff or volunteers share a short message. This is followed by an intense time of shredding the park, session fee is $5. We usually close about 10pm on Fridays. Please pick up a summer schedule as we are closed Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July weekend and Labor Day weekend.
Over the past few years we have been creating a space where we can bring our skateboarders and other park riders a well stocked pro shop so that nothing will stop them from enjoying our facility. You will find boards, wheels, scooters and parts as well as shirts, stickers and helmets. We recycle and loan boards, scooters and helmets for youth that can’t afford their own.
RIDE THE PARK
Our park was created by the energy between local skateboarders and pro builder Jud Heald with Untitled Skateboards. We accommodate skaters of ages 7 to adult, as well as, scooter and BMX riders. Depending on the season our hours of operation vary so please call 452-2621 for the latest information. A one hour session is $5 and $10 for 2-3 hours. All riders are required to wear a helmet and sign a waiver before their first session. (parents must sign if under 18). Beginning skaters are required to have lessons with our certified skate instructor offered for $10 a session. We also are happy to host birthday parties for $75 an hour.
We host concerts to provide young musicians and their fans a venue that is drug and alcohol free. Look for monthly concerts in the Red Room for $5. Open Mic nights, Battle of the Bands, and Poetry Jams are all in the works for 2016-17. Keep track of our schedule on Facebook and Instagram JP907.
SOURCES OF STRENGTH
Joel’s Place is partnering with the Fairbanks Wellness Coalition to implement community wide change using Sources of Strength, a nationally recognized suicide prevention program. Sources of Strength involves adult volunteers and peer leaders to enhance protective factors associated with reducing suicide at the school population level. The Ride Strong team is being trained in suicide prevention, we are hosting three events this summer 1) May 20 at John Weaver Memorial Skatepark, 2) June 24th at Joel's Place and 3) July 15th at North Pole Skatepark. In the fall we will be partnering with Effie Kokrine Charter School and other local high schools.
